You need the NIN in order to work in UK. You can work without your NIN just for short periods, in which you’ll pay more taxes. As soon as you receive your NIN, let your employer know, so that you can start pay the right amount of contribution.

To apply for a NIN, you must have the right to work in the UK.

They will settle an appointment for an interview where you’ll be asked about your circumstances and why you need a National Insurance number.

At the interview, bring a document to prove your identity. You can bring:

-          passport/identity card

-          residence permit

-          birth/adoption certificate

-          marriage/civil partnership certificate

-          driving licence

Before the interview, you may receive a letter that will tell you everything you need to know.

Don’t be scared if your English is not very fluent. The questions during the interview will not be so difficult.
